Mercury experiences dramatic changes in its day and night temperatures. Mercury temperatures can reach a scorching 840 F (450 C) in the day, which is hot enough to melt lead. Meanwhile, on the night side, temperatures drop to minus 290 F (minus 180 C). But as more objects were found in the same region, Ceres was considered to be the first of a class of similar objects that were eventually termed asteroids (star-like) or minor planets. In the 1900s scientists began to discover planets outside the solar system. It is difficult to tell much about such planets because they are so far away. Scientists can find them by looking for certain tiny changes in the position and light of stars. As the planet spins, it turns different sides toward and then away from the Sun. In one day, a person on the planet would see the Sun appear overhead, then set, then rise overhead again. On most planets, a day is roughly equal to the time it takes the planet to complete one rotation.

Dwarf Planet Ceres

A hypothesis proposed in September 2019 on the pre-print server arXiv suggests Planet Nine might not be a planet at all. They inferred its existence by its gravitational effects on other objects in the Kuiper Belt, a region at the fringe of the solar system that is home to icy rocks left over from the birth of the solar system. Also called trans-Neptunian objects, these Kuiper Belt objects have highly elliptical or oval orbits that align in the same direction. From 1979 until early 1999, Pluto had been the eighth planet from the sun. Then, on Feb. 11, 1999, it crossed Neptune’s path and once again became the solar system’s most distant planet — until it was redefined as a dwarf planet.

Uranus: The tilted, sideways planet in our solar system

Ice sheets and glaciers melt, transforming into liquid water. The most abundant liquid water on the planet is in the ocean, although lakes, rivers, and underground aquifers also hold liquid water. Most organisms, in fact, are made up mostly of liquid water, called body water.

Why is it difficult to observe Mercury?

In the 1990s and early 2000s, some objects similar in size to Pluto were discovered in the outer solar system. Because of that, scientists gave a more detailed definition of a planet. Neptune was the first planet predicted to exist by using math, rather than being visually detected. Irregularities in the orbit of Uranus led French astronomer Alexis Bouvard to suggest some other planet might be exerting a gravitational tug. German astronomer Johann Galle used calculations to help find Neptune in a telescope.

Earth’s atmosphere is rich in nitrogen and oxygen and it is the only world known to harbor life. Venus is the second planet from the sun and is the hottest planet in the solar system. Its thick atmosphere is extremely toxic and composed of sulfuric acid clouds, the planet is an extreme example of the greenhouse effect.

Any natural solar system object other than the Sun, a planet, a dwarf planet, or a moon is called a small body; these include asteroids, meteoroids, and comets. Most of the more than one million asteroids, or minor planets, orbit between Mars and Jupiter in a nearly flat ring called the asteroid belt. As time continued, the workings of gravity and the solar wind eventually resulted in the solar system becoming as we know it today. A mostly empty space with eight surviving planets, five dwarf planets, a band of possibly millions of asteroids. All of this is thought to be surrounded by a cloud of icy comets – preserved remains of that early dust from which the solar system formed.
